Suitable "Genetic Tests"
Academic and Commercial Lab Tests "Pre" and "Post" Legal imperatives
Health care providers will benefit from calling a Clinical Geneticist before ordering "genetic" tests. Some tests are not sensitive enough, other tests are exquisitely specific (producing false negative results) and other tests are only performed by research laboratories or are experimental. Clinical Geneticists are informed of the latest advances and can identify the most appropriate laboratories.
Patients and their relatives often require "pre" and "post" test information. Most commercial laboratories prefer to delegate such low reimbursement cognitive services to the health care provider who then may ask an academic-based colleague for assistance. Legal imperatives make such trends increasingly treacherous. It is best to select tests and laboratories with the advice of a Clinical Geneticist willing to guide and reinforce "pre" and "post" testing counseling.
