Kyiv International Women's Club (KIWC) has supported the initiative of the Ukrainian Alliance for the Prevention of Birth Defects regarding prevention of recurrence of neural tube defects in children of the women of high-risk group to have babies with such birth defects. For this purpose, it donated folic acid, the product of the Kyiv Vitamin Manufacture, in amount of 9074 UAH (1,695 U$D). The leaders of the Kiev Vitamin Manufacture, in their turn, answered the Alliance appeal, and gave 20% discount for purchasing of folic acid.

Thanks to the donation 360 women of the high-risk group will receive the folic acid pills this year. After all it is proven that women, who get a sufficient amount of folic acid before and during the first three months of pregnancy, decrease their risk to give life to a child with neural tube birth defect in more than 70%.
The folic acid will be given free to the women of the high-risk group at health care institutions of the various regions of Ukraine. Medical professionals, the Alliance's members, will implement this one-year project.
The above-mentioned project of the Alliance and KIWC is an extension of a partnership among two non-for-profit organizations in the area of birth defects prevention in Ukraine. It's welcome to mention that the last year project was focused on reducing of mental retardation of the PKU affected children due to improvement of their diet management.
