Geneticist of the Kherson Regional Children's Hospital

On April 7-8, 2003 Dr. Êenneth Jones (professor of the University of California, San Diego, USA), professor Ihor Barylyak (President of the Ukrainian Alliance for Birth Defects Prevention), Serhiy Lapchenko (UABDP Information Director) visited Kherson. The purposes of the visit were:

  • Working meetings with the regional state administration and the regional public health administration of Kherson Oblast;
  • Discussion of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome preventive measures in the region;
  • Diagnostic consultations of children with FAS in the children's house and in the boarding school for children with mental retardation;
  • Conducting a seminar for doctors of Kherson Oblast "Diagnosis of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome";
  • Training of geneticists and neonatologists of the Kherson oblast and Crimea to diagnose Fetal Alcohol Syndrome;
  • Meeting with the representatives of the US\Ukraine Foundation Community Partnership Program in Southern Region for discussion of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome preventive measures in the region, organization of FAS children rehabilitation with engagement of volunteers.

On April 7 professor Kenneth Jones, professor I. Barylyak, and S. Lapchenko met with the Deputy Head of the Kherson Regional State Administration V. Lebed, the Head of the Regional Public Health Administration of Kherson Oblast Dr. D. Dyachuk, Deputy Head of the Regional Public Health Administration Dr. N. Marchenko, oblast geneticist Dr. S.Onishchenko. During the meeting Dr. N. Marchenko highly appreciated the results of the Ukrainian-American Birth Defects Program work on prevention of birth defects. Dr. D. Dyachuk emphasized that problem of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome prevention in the Kherson Oblast is very actual nowadays. Mr. V. Lebed approved the Fetal Alcohol Syndrome preventive measures in the Kherson Oblast.

During the meeting with the American Foundation representatives FAS preventive measures and organization of FAS children rehabilitation with volunteers engagement, conducting a seminar on FAS prevention for the southern region of Ukraine with the participation of the Ukrainian-American Birth Defects Program and organization of children`s rehabilitation in Orphan Houses and boarding schools were discussed.

The same day professor Kenneth Jones, professor I. Barylyak, S. Lapchenko visited the city hospital in Nova Kakhovka and got acquainted with the work of the antenatal clinic, maternity hospital and children's consultation. They were interested in monitoring of pregnant women from the risk group (alcohol consumption) and also FAS children monitoring from the moment of birth. Then a boarding school for children with mental retardation in the village Dnepriany was visited. Prof. K. Jones examined 10 children there with the purpose of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome diagnosis.

On April 8 a seminar on FAS diagnosis for oblast doctors was held in a conference hall of the Oblast Children's Clinical Hospital. Prof. K. Jones gave a lecture to 81 doctors of the Kherson Oblast (neonatologists, geneticists, pediatricians, child neurologists). After the lecture the participants of the seminar took part in the discussion of FAS diagnosis and prevention.

Then Prof. K. Jones conducted a training on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome diagnosis for Kherson and Crimean neonatologists. This training took place in the neonatal department of the Oblast Children's Clinical Hospital. Six neonatologists took part in the training and six children were examined. The second training with participation of Kherson and Crimean geneticists took place in Kherson Chidlren's House. The doctors of the Children's House (5) also took part in it.

The oblast geneticist Dr. S. Onishchenko and an information specialist L. Neznamova acquainted the visitors with the OMNI-Center work. The oblast neonatologist O. Kiselyova represented the newborn monitoring in 5 districts and birth defects monitoring.

During the visit a meeting with the Head Doctor of the Oblast Children`s Clinical Hospital Dr. L. Lyatetskaya took place. L. Lyatetskaya highly appreciated the work of the Ukrainian-American Birth Defects Program and expressed her thanks to Drs. W. Wertelecki (UABDP Director) and K. Jones for their help to Ukrainian children.

The participants of the seminar thanked sincerely Prof. Kenneth Jones for cognitive and substantial lectures and for the received practical skills on FAS diagnosis and prevention. They also expressed sincere gratitude to Prof. W. Wertelecki for organization of the training and communication with such a prominent scientist as Prof. K. Jones.
