Khmelnytsky Delivery Hospital (June 22-23, 2000, Khmelnytsky, Ukraine)

On June 22-23 the team of the Ukrainian-American Birth Defects Program consisting of Drs. Ihor Barylyak (UABDP Scientific Director and the President of the UKrainian Alliance for the Prevention of Birth Defects), Lyubov Yevtushok (UABDP Medical Director), Tetyana Vihovska (UABDP Surveillance Director) visited Khmelnytsky city by invitation of Mr. V. Lundyshev, the oblast Governor. The goal of this visit was to discuss prospective collaboration with the medical geneticists, neonatologists, pediatricians, obstetricians and gynecologists of this oblast. Hundred thirty two medical care professionals were present.

Visitors shared their experience of conducting birth surveillance in Rivne and Volyn oblasts and dissemination of knowledge regarding the prevention of birth defects among professionals and lay people. Prof. Ihor Barylyak dwelled on the principles of genetic monitoring and the role of the Ukrainian Alliance for the Prevention of Birth Defects. Videos concerning diagnostics of common congenital diseases and malformations were presented to the participants of the conference.

Dr. Tetyana Kosovska, the Deputy Head of the Khmelnytsky Oblast Health Care Department reported indicators of children morbidity in the oblast. She stressed the importance of the Ukrainian-American Birth Defects Program.

Prof. Ihor Barylyak held meetings with Dr. Anatoly Pinchuk, Head of the Health Care Department, and Mr. Vitaly Oluyko, Deputy Governor of the Khmelnytsky oblast. Both expressed appreciation for Prof. W. Wertelecki's insight in medical care of the Khmelnytsky oblast and expressed their readiness for the oblast to be a partner of the UABDP.

Oblast (Dr. Nataliya Zymak-Zakutnya, Chief medical geneticist) and Kamianets-Podilsky (one of the administrative centers of this oblast) medical genetics services have been introduced to the members of the UABDP team.
