Ukrainian-American Birth Defects Program
Collaboration to improve health and development of children
On Sunday, February 10, 2002, the 3-rd forum of women of the Rivne area took place. The delegates represented the Rivne regional organization of the All-Ukrainian Political Association "Women for Future" and the Union of Rivne Women.
The forum has considered the results of round table sessions in all rayons of the oblast and Rivne city. Their main theme was the discussion of "Woman and her health" problem.

Among 4 questions that were considered at the sessions there was a question of "The folic acid role in birth defects prevention". This question was prepared by the Ukrainian-American Birth Defects Program. 60 women - delegates from all rayons of the Rivne oblast - took part in the forum work. Among them there were doctors, teachers, journalists, workers of cultural institutions, and workers of rural administrations. Dr. Maria Dumanovska, the deputy chief of the Rivne Health Administration, analyzed the state of health care delivering to mothers and children. Huge attention was paid to the report "Folic acid Role" which was presented by Dr. Lyubov Yevtushok.

Prepared for this special event materials concerning preventive role of folic acid were distributed among the forum participants.
Among other questions there were such ones as "Comecarcinoma prevention" and "Prevention of sexually transmitted diseases". The majority of speakers underlined the role of mass media in education of the population, especially of women of reproductive age, to prevent serious diseases.
