Ukrainian-American Birth Defects Program
UABDP distributed fax-machines among the Rivne Oblast delivery facilities
The Ukrainian American Birth Defects Program (UABDP) expanded its birth defects surveillance and monitoring capacity in Ukraine by expanding its communications network to maternity hospitals in Rivne and Lutsk oblasts where monitoring is conducted as well as some medical libraries in those regions.
On March 19, 2003 a ceremony for the Rivne oblast took place at the Rivne OMNI Resource Center. Fifteen fax machines were distributed to the chief obstetricians, gynecologists from rayons (districts) and heads of perinatal departments of maternity hospitals for dedicated use for transmission of data and information.

Deputy Head of Rivne Health Care Administration, Dr. Maria Dumanovska spoke to the participants. She highlighted the work of the UABDP and underscored the importance of information support in medicine, particularly in maternal/child care.
Dr. Ihor Shumlyansky, Head of Rivne oblast Clinical Diagnostic Center emphasized the significance of the event and contribution of UABDP Program Director Dr. W. Wertelecki for the improvement of health care and support in the region. Dr. Shumlyansky stressed the necessity to establish closer contacts between rayon hospitals and OMNI Resource Centers. He reported the further development of tele-medicine in Rivne oblast utilizing the UABDP resources. He praised the distribution of fax machines by the UABDP as "the first step to creation of OMNI Resource Centers in rayons".

UABDP Medical Director and head of the Rivne Medical Genetics Department, Dr. Lyubov Yevtushok reported prior UABDP activity wherein six fax machines were previously distributed to four rayon perinatal departments, the perinatal pathology department and the Rivne oblast medical library. In her speech Dr. Yevtushok pointed out, that Rivne OMNI-Center is a part of OMNI network, including Kyiv, Lutsk, Kherson, Khmelnitsky and Simferopil.
