Oksana Paskhalna,
the Ukrainian Alliance for the Prevention of BD Volunteer,
Head of "Healthy Nation" PKU Parental Support Group, Kyiv
The Training and the Meeting titled "Volunteers' Activity as the Basis for Understanding and Partnership of Young People" took place on October 1-5, 2000 in Poland near Lublin under encouragement of the "Renaissance" International Foundation (Kyiv) and Stephan Batory Foundation (Poland). The Ukrainian delegation consisted of ten persons representing Non-for-profit Organizations of Ukraine. Members of delegation were selected on the basis of competition organized by the "Dobra Volya" Voluntary Center (Kyiv). It was the honor and my pleasure to represent the Ukrainian Alliance for the Prevention of Birth Defects at this meeting.
The meeting had the aim to show the work of the so-called Meeting Houses (MH), and was held in one of such Meeting Houses at the picturesque town of Nasutow. The Colleagues from Germany and Poland shared their experience, informed us about how MHs work in Germany, how MHs emerged in Poland, their adaptation to the current social and political situation, objectives, means of operation, forms of activity, the volunteer work model and its role and significance, successes and failures, perspectives for the future. The perspective of creation the Meeting Houses in Ukraine had been discussed.
To my mind, the idea of creation of Meeting Houses can draw attention first of all to their general-purpose, to their possibility to involve various groups of youth in cooperation. One can introduce here different models of activities, especially for the persons with birth defects.
