Ukrainian-American Birth Defects Program
International Seminar "Monitoring, Research and Prevention of Birth Defects"
September 29 - October 1, 2002 (Lviv)
The seminar was organized by the Health Care Departments of the Volyn and Rivne State Administrations and the Ukrainian-American Birth Defects Program.
The aim of the seminar was:
Among the international specialists there were UABDP Director Dr W. Wertelecki, Dr L. Edmonds (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, USA), Dr L. Sever (University of Texas, USA). The Seminar was greeted by Dr. W. Wertelecki, Prof M. Gzhehotsky (Pro-rector of the Lviv State University), Dr. O. Sulima (Chief Neonatologist of the Ukrainian Ministry of Health), Dr O. Hnateyko (Chief Medical Geneticist of the Ukrainian Ministry of Health), Dr I. Barylyak (the President of the UAPBD). |

On September 29 there were presented the following reports:

After the reports there was a presentation of posters that were presented during the international congresses and symposia where UABDP took part. The seminar participants saw the results of publishing activity of the Program Informational OMNI-Centers. They greatly appreciated the presented books, booklets and flyers and expressed their wish to get them.
On September 30, 2002 there were presented the Registry of Newborns of the Volyn and Rivne Oblasts (Dr. T. Vihovska) and birth defects surveillance according to the international standards in the UABDP framework (Dr. L. Yevtushok). Professor L. Edmonds continued the program of the seminar from 9.00 -17.30. He reported methods and ways of realization of birth defects monitoring programs in different states of the USA, practical usage of BD monitoring data.
After the end Dr. L. Edmonds' course there was conducted a round-table discussion "Alliance for the Prevention of Birth Defects and collaboration widening" under the direction of the Alliance President Dr I. Barylyak. In his opening speech Dr I. Barylyak talked about the Alliance activities for 3 year, the experience of creation and work of some parental groups, getting of new partners. I. Kharytonova, the Alliance Coordinator, talked about the realization of the Neural Tube Defects Recurrence Prevention Program in women of high-risk group.
T. Protsyk, Coordinator of Teaching Programs of the Western-Ukrainian Teaching Center of the Ukraine-USA Foundation, presented the main directions of her activities and possible aspects of collaboration with UABDP and the Ukrainian Alliance for the Prevention of Birth Defects, particularly in promotion of creation and work of parental organizations.
The third day of the seminar (October 1, 2002) was devoted to the main principles of epidemiology and epidemiological research under the direction of Dr L. Sever.
103 participants took part in the seminar. Among them there were Dr. Sulima, Chief Neonatologist of the Ukrainian Ministry of Health, Dr O. Hnateyko, Chief Medical Geneticist of the Ukrainian Ministry of Health, Director of the Hereditary Pathology Institute of the Ukrainian Academy of Medical Sciencies, chiefs of mother and child health care from 8 oblasts and Autonomous Republic Crimea, heads, assistant professors and lecturers of pediatric, social hygiene, medical genetic departments of 8 medical universities (Kyiv, Lviv, Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk, Vinnytsya, Chernivtsi, Donetsk, Crimea), medical geneticists from 11 oblasts, neonatologists from the oblasts who work within UABDP, representatives of Lviv health care.
There were discussions after the main part of the seminar. Drs. O. Sulima (Kyiv), L. Kovalchuk (Ivano-Frankivsk), N. Banadyga (Ternopil), Y. Korzhynsky (Lviv), N. Sinchuk, P. Vitte, A. Koblyanska thanked first of all the UABDP Director Dr. W. Wertelecki, Drs L. Edmonds and L. Sever for the organization and conducting of the seminar.
All the present were very interested in the publishing activities of the Program Informational OMNI-Centers particularly in the following books prepared for printing: "Growth References From the Third Trimester to Adulthood", "Birth Defects: Book for Specialists" (containing I.B.I.S. materials), "Birth Defects: Book for Parents" (containing I.B.I.S. materials), "Folic Acid and Prevention of Diseases" etc. Participants of the seminar placed their orders to get those books.
